The Venus flytrap is a charismatic carnivorous plant. On the upper side of the leaf there is an insect trap that looks like an open mouth. When a small insect breaks in, it can catch it very quickly and digest it slowly. Potted plants are suitable for viewing on sunny windowsills and balconies and are considered carnivorous plants in nature.
Sowing instructions
Soak seeds in pure water for 48 hours. ➡️Remove floating seeds. ➡️Distribute seeds evenly in the peat moss. ➡️7-13 days to germinate
Breeding method
🌱1. Choose the right soil
Venus fly traps like to grow in acidic soil. When preparing the soil, make sure that the pH of the soil is between 3.5 and 5. You can use peat, perlite, sphagnum moss and other materials to prepare the substrate, or directly buy special soil for carnivorous plants. Also, make sure that the soil has good drainage and air permeability.
🌱2. Provide enough light
Venus fly traps are very fond of sunlight and require more than 14 hours of sunshine during the growing season. Place the fly trap in a place with enough light, such as a balcony, windowsill, etc. Artificial fill lights can also be used as light sources.
🌱3. Control the appropriate temperature
Venus fly trap is suitable for growing in a warm and humid environment, the optimal temperature is 21-35 °C. In general, Venus flytraps can tolerate low temperatures below 0 °C for short periods of time. However, if the low temperature remains below 0 °C for a week, you will need to bring them indoors to keep warm.
🌱4. Watering and feeding
Watering is the most important and error-prone aspect of Venus flytrap cultivation. Pay attention to the following points when watering:
🌷Use soft water for watering, such as purified water, distilled water, rainwater, air conditioning condensate, etc. Do not use hard water such as tap water, mineral water, etc.
🌷Water it using the pot immersion method or waist water method, that is, place the potted plant in a large plate filled with water and let the soil absorb water naturally until the surface is moist.
🌷During the growing season (about April to November), keep the soil moist but not too wet to avoid root rot. During the dormant season (about December to March), reduce the frequency of watering.
Feeding is the most interesting and skillful aspect of fly trap breeding. When feeding, pay attention to the following points:
🌷Do not feed Venus flytrap food that people like, such as chicken, beef, etc., because it is difficult to digest and may cause the leaves to smell or become moldy.
🌷Feed the Venus flytrap insects that are suitable for it, such as flies, mosquitoes, ants, etc. The size should not exceed one-third of the leaves, and the number should not exceed one per leaf per month.
🌷If the Venus flytrap can catch insects by itself, there is no need for artificial feeding. If you want to add nutrients, you can spray low-concentration liquid fertilizer on the leaves.
🌷When feeding dead insects to a fly trap, gently stimulate the trigger hairs with a toothpick or other tool to close the leaves, and continue to stimulate several times after closing to simulate the struggle of live insects.
