🍒Physalis peruviana, also known as Golden Berry, Cape Gooseberry or Peruvian Ground Cherry, is a perennial plant native to South America, such as Peru and Colombia. Known for its small orange berries and the wavy edges of its leaves, golden berries have a unique flavor and numerous nutritional benefits.
Appearance and features:
- Berries: The berries of the golden berry are small, usually enclosed in a hard shell, similar to a small tomato. The color of the husk is usually orange, hence the name "golden berry."
- Plant: Goldenberry plants typically grow 1 to 2 feet tall, with wavy-edged leaves and bright yellow flowers. The flowers will gradually develop into husk-encased berries.
Taste:
The taste of golden berries is its uniqueness. The flavor of the berries can be described as sweet and sour, sometimes with a hint of lemon. This unique texture and flavor makes it very popular in cooking and as a snack.
Nutritional value:
Golden berries are rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B (especially vitamin B3, vitamin B6) and vitamin K. In addition, they provide dietary fiber, antioxidants (such as carotenoids and polyphenols), minerals (such as iron, phosphorus, magnesium) and small amounts of protein.
This makes golden berries an excellent ingredient for boosting the immune system, maintaining eyesight, improving digestion and maintaining bone health.

🌱How to Grow Physalis Peruviana
STEP 1:Start indoors in early spring with bottom heat, and transplant out in warm weather, once night time temperatures are consistently above 10°C (50°F).
STEP 2:Sow seeds 5mm-1cm (¼-½”) deep in individual pots or trays. Space transplants 45-60cm (18-24″) apart in rows 90-120cm (36-48″) apart.
STEP 3:Full sun and regular watering will keep the plants producing. Plants need support to keep drooping branches off the ground. Tomato cages work well. Tomatillos and ground cherries are good candidates for large containers. Be sure to pick the fruit before it drops.
STEP 4:In optimal conditions at least 75% of seeds should germinate. Usual seed life: 3 years.
STEP 5:For salsa verde, harvest physalis peruviana when they’re just starting to lighten up on the blossom end. But for fresh eating, the fruit is sweetest when it turns yellow and splits its husks, sometimes falling to the ground. For ground cherries, the fruit ripen from green to yellow-gold, and drop to the ground in their husks.
